Southampton players and coaches to donate wages to charity after Leicester embarrassment

SOUTHAMPTON stars will donate a day’s wages to charity after their humiliating collapse against Leicester.

The 10-man Saints were smashed 9-0 in a record-breaking victory for the Foxes as Ayoze Perez and Jamie Vardy helped themselves to hat-tricks.

Southampton conceded nine goals on a miserable Friday night for their fans

Boss Ralph Hasenhuttl apologised to supporters in the wake of the crushing loss and the club have announced that players and staff will give away their wages for Friday.

A statement read: “SouthamptonFootball Clubs first-team players and coaching staff have announced they will be donating their wages from last Friday to Saints Foundation.

“The squad has been in at Staplewood Campus throughout the weekend, working on putting things right for the clubs supporters.

“As the first step towards that, the group has decided that they wish to donate their wages from the day of the Leicester game to Saints Foundation, in order to help the vital work that is conducted by the charity.

“Saints Foundation works with 12,000 young people and adults of all ages every year, using the power and passion of sport to transform lives.

“The players and staff are now directing all their energy and focus towards the two games in Manchester this week.”

Leicester‘s win saw them move second in the table behind Liverpool – taking the record for the biggest away victory in English top-flight history in the process.

It is also the joint-largest triumph in the league alongside Manchester United’s 9-0 demolition of Ipswich in 1995.

Ryan Bertrand was sent off after just 12 minutes but Hasenhuttl insisted the red was no excuse for his side’s display.

He told Sky Sports: “It would be easy to say the red card after 10 minutes was to blame but I think its not normal to discuss every goal and every high of the result.

“I take 100 per cent responsibility for this result today and it was no performance from my team this cannot happen in this way.

“The best thing in the stadium – beside the opposition – were the crowd who stayed in the stadium. How they acted is more than we deserve and I apologise for this no performance today.”

Southampton face two clashes against Manchester City this week starting with tomorrow’s League Cup tie at the Etihad.
