England skipper Morgan says Malan selfish for refusing last run to save not out

, England skipper Morgan says Malan selfish for refusing last run to save not out

EOIN MORGAN accused Dawid Malan of being selfish despite his phenomenal record-breaking T20 century.

England hero Malan smashed an unbeaten 103 off just 51 balls in Fridays crushing 76-run triumph over New Zealand.

Eoin Morgan and Dawid Malan steered England to an impressive victory

But ruthless skipper Morgan was unimpressed Malan refused a risky run on the last ball of the innings to remain not out.

Asked whether his young, experimental T20 squad reminded him of his World Cup winners, perfectionist Morgan replied: Its too early to say.

The biggest indicator will be planting seeds and watching guys strive towards that common goal.

But, if we have guys who are not running off the last ball because they want a not out, theres something to address.

Malan went to his 100 off just 48 balls the fastest ever T20 ton by an Englishman in a whopping 241-3 total.

But on the final delivery of the innings, Sam Billings missed an attempted hook shot and Malan, at the non-strikers end, turned down the single.

And Morgan wants his T20 players to be unselfish in the way his 50-over stars thought only of the team cause on the way to winning the World Cup.

It might appear pernickety by Morgan but he is famous for his attention to detail and desire to eliminate any hint of selfishness.

Generally, of course, Morgan was delighted with Malans contribution to Englands record-breaking T20 spree. Morgan himself made the quickest half-century (21 balls) and 241-3 is the countrys highest total.

Malan can expect to be in the squad for Englands next T20 series three matches in South Africa in February and the World Cup in Australia a year from now.

Joe Root is perhaps the most vulnerable but Morgan is a big fan of the Test skipper, not just for his batting but for his contribution to the brains trust.

When asked whether Roots place might come under pressure, Morgan insisted: Its too far away.

He wants to play but, given the nature of Joes schedule and others, they dont have a lot of opportunities to play Twenty20 cricket.

There are guys in the changing room in the same boat as Dawid who have played fewer games.

Its hugely satisfying to have so many options. So an innings like Dawid played shifts the standard for everyone.

I remember the game in Mumbai where we chased down 230 against South Africa in the World Twenty20 in 2016. There was no time to blink, guys were coming in and going harder and harder all the time.

But to do it with an inexperienced side, with a guy who hasnt had a huge amount of opportunities in the past scoring a 48-ball hundred is remarkable, really. It creates strength in depth and thats what we set out to do on this tour.

Morgan also confirmed Adil Rashid remains his No1 spinner despite Lancashire leggie Matt Parkinson taking five wickets in six overs on tour so far.
