Betfair Stayers Handicap Hurdle: Tedham expected to improve for three miles at Haydock on Saturday

, Betfair Stayers Handicap Hurdle: Tedham expected to improve for three miles at Haydock on Saturday

THE Jonjo O’Neill yard have landed some right touches in big handicaps over the years.

And the progressive TEDHAM can strike a blow for the master of Jackdaws in Saturday’s 100,000 Stayers Handicap Hurdle at Haydock.

Jonjo O’Neill can win the Stayers Handicap Hurdle on Saturday with Tedham

The lightly-raced five-year-old ought to sneak in at the foot of the handicap this weekend, and he is expected to post a huge effort under a feather weight.

He had some smart form over hurdles as a novice last term, chasing home the likes of Al Dancer at Carlisle and Getaway Trump at Exeter.

He immediately opened his account when switched to handicap company, carrying a big weight to success in a decent race at Wincanton over 2m5f (solid form).

The gelding was sent off favourite for a red-hot contest at the Grand National meeting after that, but he was too keen early and unable to do himself justice in the closing stages.

He returned over 2m5f at Cheltenham last month and he ran better than the bare result (running on late for sixth) suggests, as he was poorly placed in a steadily run race.

The step up to 3m here looks sure to suit, and on the pick of his 2017-18 form a mark of 130 looks very workable.

The ground at Haydock is likely to be unseasonably decent on Saturday, a positive for Tedham, and it doesn’t look the strongest renewal of this race on paper.

The chief threat will likely come from Rebecca Curtis’ Lisnagar Oscar, who is set to return to hurdles after two defeats over fences.

He had some smart form over timber last season and looks attractively weighted off 141.

The Pipe yard are in fine fettle at present and Umbrigado heads the betting for the Pond House team.

He lost his unbeaten record under Rules in Grade 1 company at Aintree in April, but he was far from disgraced.

But he isn’t certain to relish this step up to 3m, for all he was second in a point-to-point earlier in his career.

Ask Ben, second to Lisnagar Oscar here last winter, and Highland Hunter are both making their seasonal reappearance.

They are worth a place on the shortlist, but at odds of 10-1 Tedham makes plenty of each-way appeal.
