Our man Sam Twiston-Davies on his book of rides at Bangor and the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury

, Our man Sam Twiston-Davies on his book of rides at Bangor and the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury

WE were treated to a right spectacle last weekend at Ascot between CyrnameandAltior.

It was an amazing race to watch and fair play to both Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson for going for it.

It is very easy to take the easy option with these good horses but it was a race to behold. Cyrname is clearly a top-class horse and Altior lost nothing in defeat.

I know they hold him in the highest regard at Ditcheat and he is a gorgeous horse to look at. He will have a massive chance in the King George.
There was another smashing race up at Haydock in the Betfair, whereBristol De Mairan his heart out for Nige. He was just picked off late byLostintranslationwho was held up and flew home, but we are all proud of his effort.

The staying division looks red-hot this year. Hopefully we will have a few more races to savour in the King George and the Gold Cup. Its great for the game to have these horses locking horns.

The big race this weekend is the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury and as ever it is fiercely competitive.

If you put a line throughOK Corralsrun in the four-miler he would have to be a leading player, he was so impressive whenwinning at Warwick last year. I saw him gallop at Newbury the other week and thought he looked a picture.

But Colin Tizzard has got a very strong hand by the look of it and the one I like most isElegant Escape. He is a class horse who has plenty of rock-solid form in these big races.

I head up to Bangor for five nice rides this afternoon and they all look to have good chances.

Im looking forward to getting the leg up on Constantine Bay(12.10), he won some nice races as a young horse and was fourth in the Triumph a couple of years ago.

Hes had one run since his four-year-old season and is with Brian Ellison now. He looks a good buy, from what I hear he has been schooling well and seems in really good nick. He is one Im really looking forward to.

Destined To Shine (12.45) is having his second run after a wind op. He will like going this way round because he jumped out to his left at Hereford last time. The ground is fine for him and he should run well.

I dont know too much about Fortified Bay(1.20) but he is very consistent, stays well and again the ground will be fine for him.

Vienna Court(1.55) was a bit keen last time so we are hoping we can get her to switch off a little bit better this time. But she had some good form on soft ground before that at Ffos Las so we are hoping we can get her back on track.

Jelski(2.30) is a useful horse and ran a nice race last time. He is still a big, green, raw horse but hopefully the penny is starting to drop with him now and he will go close.
