Sheff Utd confirm Jack Rodwell transfer interest as ex-England star looks to revive career after Blackburn spell

SHEFFIELD UNITED have confirmed they are interested in signing former England star Jack Rodwell.

The 28-year-old is training with United and Blades manager Chris Wilder has expressed his interest in the former Everton and Manchester City midfielder, saying it is “something that might develop.”

Former England star Jack Rodwell is a free agent after leaving Blackburn Rovers in the summer and has now been training with Sheffield United

Rodwell is now a free agent after his contract with Blackburn Rovers came to an end in the summer.

He was also linked with a move to Roma in October has been linked with fellow Italian club Parma.

However, Wilder could snap him up in the upcoming January transfer window.

A similar situation came to fruition in David McGoldrick last year when the striker was invited to train with Sheffield United leading to a contract offer.

Wilder has specified that he will monitor Rodwell, also telling reporters: “It’s not a trial. Jack is in for a few days.

“As you’ve seen in the past, David McGoldrick came in for a few days and Jack is looking at us and we are looking at Jack.

“He is obviously a very, very talented player who should be playing in the Premier League regularly… he’s looking for a home and it’s something that might develop along the way.”

Wilder has also expressed his focus on adding to his squad’s defence and strengthening his midfield.

Therefore Rodwell fits in rather nicely, with midfield being where he has played for most of his career.

Wilder added: “People will try and put two and two together.

“Defence and midfield are the main areas, just to strengthen and boost the squad for the second half of the season.”

Sheffield United accomplished a return to top flight football this season, up from the Championship where they played last year.

They go into the weekend on an impressive unbeaten run away from home as well as sitting seventh in the table.

They are a mere four points off a Champions League qualification spot.

Awaiting them next- Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
