Arsenal look at Kevin Volland as first Mikel Arteta signing as club eye left-footed forward in January transfer window

NEW Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is interested in making Bayer Leverkusen striker Kevin Volland his first signing, according to reports.

The Gunners have been scouting the forward, 27, who has bagged five goals this season.

Kevin Volland has just 18 months left on his current deal at Bayer Leverkusen

The former Hoffenheim ace last scored in the Bundesliga sides 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League group stages.

Although he is currently on a nine game run without scoring.

According to Sky Sports, the fact that he is a left-footed striker who can also play on the right flank as well as in the No9 role makes him an attractive transfer target.

And with just 18 months left on his current contract, Arsenal would be in a position to offer a lower price.

Leverkusen may well be reluctant to sell Volland in the January transfer window, given they are set to play Porto in the last 32 of the Europa League.

Arsenal are also interested in signing wantaway Napoli star Dries Mertens.

The Belgian, 32, hinted at a goodbye on Instagram to the Italian city after a dressing room rift.

He was fined 145,000 for his part in the revolt against club owner Aurelio De Laurentiis.
