Stokes senior, Ged, is said to be in a stable condition in hospital

And the BBC Sports Personality of the Year winner told Sky TV: “He’s doing really well considering where he was at the start of the week.

“(There’s) lots of people we have to thank for getting dad in a better condition – the doctors we had on hand initially, all the staff at the hospital, the surgeons and all the people who reached out.

“Graeme Smith and Mark Boucher sent their kind regards and said anything that Cricket South Africa could so to help, we’re here for you.

“There are so many people we have to thank for helping the family through a real tough time. So thanks to all of them.”

CONDITION STABILISED

Stokes senior was reportedly seriously ill and in a critical condition when he was taken to hospital on December 23.

On the pitch Stokes junior could yet play a crucial rearguard role as the tourists are 121-1, chasing 376 to win.

Jofra Archer’s 5-102 helped limit the hosts to 272 on day three as sickness plagued Joe Root‘s men.

Jos Buttler never made it onto the field, so Jonny Bairstow went behind the stumps.

And even Root spent time off as England battled to recover from their pathetic first innings of 181.

The tourists now need a record run-chase from a visiting side to win at the Centurion.

The previous highest mark of 251-8, achieved by England 19 years ago, was later mentioned in the match-fixing trial of ex-South Africa skipper Hansie Cronje.
