BUSTER EDWARDS produced one of the most remarkable late bursts in racing history at Haydock this afternoon.
The David Pipe-trained favourite came from the clouds to run down the leaders in the Bryn Gates Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle.
Under Welsh National hero Jack Tudor, the 7-2 jolly was out of the picture for much of the home straight – before finding a fifth gear to zoom down the outside in a whirlwind finish that had to be seen to be believed.
Eventual runner-up Strike Westcould only watch as the market leader gunned him down in the shadows of the post.
Punters and experts alike were left speechless, with one even claiming he should return to the track for a five-furlong prize in June.
Trainer David Pipe tweeted: “What an amazing performance from Buster Edwards under an incredible ride from Jack Tudor at Haydock.
“I did tell him not to hit the front too soon!”
An ecstatic Tudor said: “Mr Pipe told me not to get there too soon, and we didn’t. They went real fast and he was just flat out.
“I was always rolling away on him and just behind the bridle. He was responding all the time but I didn’t think he would finish the way he did.
“I tried to switch him to keep his mind thinking and then we came wide for a late run and he flew to the line.”
Pipe’s miracle winner hit a massive 999/1 in running – but in the end triumphed with something to spare.
