Disastrous Harry Maguire slammed by Man Utd fans for performance against Arsenal with 85m price tag hanging over head

, Disastrous Harry Maguire slammed by Man Utd fans for performance against Arsenal with 85m price tag hanging over head

HARRY MAGUIRE had an afternoon to forget on New Year’s Day as Manchester United crashed to a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.

And fans online were quick to jump on his back with some calling him a “disaster” and questioning the whopping 85million United paid Leicester for his services last summer.

Harry Maguire has been slammed by Man Utd fans after his performance at Arsenal

Maguire, 26, captained the Red Devils but missed a huge chance to get his side back in the game with a missed header at the end of the first-half.

He was also run ragged by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette as Arsenal ran riot.

First-half goals from Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis gave the Gunners all three points and United fans online were not pleased with Maguire at all.

Dean Coleman tweeted: “Another disaster class by Harry Maguire… World class defender I’ll have you know.”

And Crouch posted: “For 85m you expect a lot better. Positionally he’s awful and reckless at times. Made our defence worse!”

After Maguire played an Arsenal forward through on goal after just eight minutes, John Mc Mahon posted: “Look at Harry Maguire!

“80m or 8m that is pathetic defending. He can see the line and see Lindelof is playing offside!”

Most fans focused on the huge sum of money United paid for Maguire – just 10m more than Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk the summer before – but some were unhappy with him regardless of the cash.

Craig said: “Not impressed. It’s not even about the price.

“When he heads it’s like he doesn’t even look where to. He doesn’t command the defence and he is our captain.”

And it was not just fans who laid into the former Sheffield United man as ex-England and Manchester United full-back Paul Parker also took aim.

He said: “Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelf are not good enough.

“I dont know how they are going to improve on the two of them.

“They still have players who wont be taking United forward when you consider defenders like Jaap Stam, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic who were vital when United teams were winning.

A lot of people are talking about how much money United need to spend to bring in new defenders but what they are not thinking about is whether the players will actually want to come to Old Trafford right now.

The England centre-back was not the only United player to come in for stick with Luke Shaw and Jesse Lingard particularly disappointing.

But Maguire – who has played every minute of United’s 21 Premier League games this season and kept just three clean sheets in the process – got the brunt of it.

He is also yet to score despite the fact he goes up for almost every corner and fans are starting to ask questions.

Despite telling his United teammates to start winning ugly before Christmas, he was also blasted as “embarrassing” by fans after their recent 1-1 home draw with Everton.
