Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti lines up shock transfer swoop for former Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan

EVERTON boss Carlo Ancelotti is lining up a shock swoop for former Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan, according to reports.

The Estonian veteran, 34, played 53 times for the Reds between 2016 and 2018 before joining Cagliari.

But now Ancelotti is hoping to land the 127-cap international in a bid to bolster his defensive ranks with the Toffees just five points above the relegation zone.

Klavan is out of contract at the Serie A side at the end of the season, but does have an option for a further year on his current deal.

As of now, the former Liverpool defender is able to negotiate pre-contract terms with European clubs ahead of a free move in July.

But with Everton desperate to add some steel and experience to their back-four, Ancelotti has specifically singled out Klavan to the board, say reports in Italy.

Klavan is expected to cost anywhere between 1million and 2m, but as of now no official offer has been made.

Ancelotti will know all about Klavan too, having been in charge of Napoli during the defender’s time in Italy.

On leaving Liverpool, Klavan revealed he “had no intention” of quitting the Anfield side.

But the offer of first-team football from Cagliari was too tempting to ignore, with Jurgen Klopp making it clear he’d slipped down the pecking order.

The Reds boss had Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren – all still at the club – ahead of him.

Everton take on Liverpool in the third-round of the FA Cup this weekend.

And ahead of the tie, Ancelotti has revealed he was once interviewed for the Kop job after Brendan Rodgers was sacked.

The Reds, of course, opted to bring in Klopp, with the German leading the club to the Champions League title in the summer.
