Drama at Lingfield races with crazy three-way photo finish leaving a dead-heat and share of the spoils

YOU need an eager eye to spot the winner of the opener from Lingfield this afternoon.

Even the judges couldn’t split them after a close look at the photo finish.

A hair split the first three home

And for good measure the third-placed horse was even involved in the finish, only a short-head back.

After a lengthy look the judges couldn’t split 11-1 chance Thorn and 40-1 stunner Highway One.

Rakematiz flew home late in the day to try and join the eventual winners but was narrowly denied.

And for Thorn’s trainer John Gallagher, he thought his horse should have won on another day.

He said on At The Races: “I’ve not seen the print but I thought we got there on the nod.

“It was unlucky really. Hector Crouch said we should try blinkers on him next time.

“He thought he should have won by a length but Thorn ran a nice race. It took a while for the decision but I’m happy to share it.”

Pat Cosgrave, rider of Highway One also thought he’d done enough.

He said: “I knew we’d either won or it was a dead-heat. He stuck his neck out well and should stay further too.”
