Maria Sharapova slumps to world ranking low after Australian Open disaster

TORMENTED Maria Sharapova could drop as low as 366th in the world rankings after one of her most humbling defeats.

And the Russian, a five-time Grand Slam champion, doesnt know if she will return to the Australian Open in 2021.

Maria Sharapova has lost in the first round of the past three Grand Slams
The Russian was handed a wildcard entry because her 2019 season was affected by a shoulder injury

The 32-year-old was turfed out in straight sets in the first round on the Rod Laver Arena.

The former world No.1 cut a dejected figure as she lost 6-3 6-4 defeat to Croatians No.19 seed Donna Vekic in Melbourne.

Shazza is only here after being granted a wildcard by tournament officials after a shoulder injury essentially wiped out her 2019 season.

She is nowhere near match fitness and there are genuine worries about her future.

This was her third straight opening-round defeat at a Grand Slam and there are concerns she may never return to the elite.

Sharapova, a singles winner in 2008, said: I was fortunate to be here and I am thankful to be part of this event.

Shazza was well beaten in straight sets by Donna Vekic on the Rod Laver Arena
Croatian Vekic, the No.19 seed, has never been beyond the second round in Melbourne

Its tough to tell what will happen in 12 months time. I dont know.

I havent thought of my schedule moving forward yet.

I can speak about my struggles, things I have gone through with my shoulder, but its not in my character to do so.

I was there, I put myself out there and as tough as it was, I finished the match not the way I wanted.

Last year I played seven or eight tournaments. I dont know if I can look at the ranking and think about it in depth.

I havent played much and was injured most of the year.

There are no guarantees when you work hard that you will win in the first round, third round or in the final. Thats why it is so special to be a champion even just once.

I would love to play more but I dont have a crystal ball.

You have to keep believing in yourself. If you dont, thats a bad formula.

Sharapova is a divisive figure in this sport given she was banned for 15 months for failing a drugs test at the 2016 Australian Open.
