Heather Watson keeps football boyfriend happy with Australian Open progress

Heather Watson gave her footballer boyfriend plenty of cheer as she reached the Australian Open second round despite blustery conditions.

The Brit has been dating Yeovil Town striker Courtney Duffus since last summer.

And the love affair is clearly influencing and improving her tennis as she came from behind on Court 12.

The 27-year-old survived the strong wind to beat Czech star Kristyna Pliskova 4-6 6-3 6-1.

On the eve of the championships, Watson revealed she had been going out with Duffus since meeting up at Wimbledon last July.

The pair have been inseparable, well as much as they can in a long-distance relationship, and Duffus has benefited too, scoring 12 goals for Yeovil this season as they attempt to win promotion to League Two.

In the first Grand Slam of the year, Watson coped with the gusts of wind and served very well, particularly on her first serve, and converted five of her 11 break points.

Heather Watson has reached the second round of the Australian Open for just the third time
There was a loyal British crowd on Court 12 to watch Watson follow fellow Brit Harriet Dart into the second round

This is just the third time in nine appearances Down Under where she has won her opening match of the tournament.

The world No.75 will now face either Belgian No.16 seed Elise Mertens or Montenegro Danka Kovinic.

If it is Mertens, then she will have great memories of the three-set victory in the quarter-finals of Hobart International only a week ago.

Watson has followed the lead of fellow Brit Harriet Dart by winning her opening match in Australia.

And if we dare to dream, if they keep on winning, then there is the possibility of facing Dart in the fourth round.
