TOTTENHAM got back to winning ways with a narrow victory over Aston Villa.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s men ran out 2-1 winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium thanks to a second-half own goal from Matt Targett.
Dean Smith’s men put up stern resistance until the 26th minute when Pierre-Emile Hjoberg’s deflected shot from outside the box nestled into the far corner.
Scotland international John McGinn nearly put the visitors on level terms before half time but his sensational half volley from outside the box went wide of Hugo Lloris’ far post.
Villa came close to drawing level shortly after the restart but the Spurs defence held firm in the face of mounting pressure.
But the pressure told in the 66th minute when Ollie Watkins got on the end of a Matt Targett just inside the six-yard box.
Parity didn’t last long though as Targett put the ball into his own net trying to clear a cross from Heung-Min Son.
Danny Ings almost rescued a point in the 76th minute but saw his left-footed effort saved by Lloris.
