Five things racing fans would love to see in Drive To Survive-style Netflix show

RACING fans are whipping themselves up into a frenzy over the idea of a proposed new Netflix show on the sport in the style of the smash hit Drive To Survive.

The Racing Post report that talks over a new series are at an ‘advanced’ stage.

The show could make fascinating viewing around Dettori in particular, as he enters the twilight of his career

But it begs the question, what would feature and who would the cameras focus on the most if it focused on the 2022 Flat season?

Here, SunSport looks at five key storylines that could prove a huge hit with viewers.

Oisin Murphy vs William Buick jockey title fight

This year’s race to be crowned champion jockey was an absolute thriller.

Going right down to the wire, two of the most engaging characters in the game poured every ounce of blood, sweat and tears into winning.

In Murphy’s case there was an awful lot of blood after his terrifying paddock incident.

A repeat of that – and a season-long behind-the-scenes look at their rivalry – would prove a belter.

Frankie Dettori

A lot has been written, said and filmed about the world’s most famous jockey.

And his brilliant new documentary delves even deeper into it.

Truth is though, he remains the most recognisable face in the game – especially as his career draws to a close.

How good would it be if we got to see Dettori in the weighing room, showing nerves and stress, contemplating, perhaps, the end of his time in the saddle?

Trainer wars

Often the people in the background, no one goes through more pressure and anxeity on the day of a race than a trainer.

And that’s when the times are good.

Following them in the moments leading up to the Ascot Gold Cup, for example, or seeing them learn one of their top stars has picked up an injury and might not be able to race, could make fascinating viewing.

As would learning about the rivalries at the top of the game, with millions at stake.

Follow an owner

There’s huge scope here for what could prove the real crux of the show and keep viewers coming back.

Sure, you have the billionaires with all their money and the top horses.

But how great would it be to follow every step of a true underdog story, a bargain buy who rockets up the ranks and has a shot at a big race at Ascot?

The injuries, the pain… and the recovery

Part and parcel of being a jockey is putting your life in your hands whenever you race.

Unfortunately, injuries are commonplace.

But so are the stories of recovery and coming back to fight another day.

Setting up camp at Oaksey House and seeing riders complete their painful paths back to the saddle could make riveting viewing.
