Wayne Rooney joins NFT craze as ex-Man Utd star sells digital artwork of himself for £40 each on Twitter

EX-MANCHESTER UNITED ace Wayne Rooney has joined in on the NFT craze by selling digital artwork of himself for £40 each.

Fans who pick up the unique Non-Fungible Tokens will be hoping they increase in value.

To promote the new partnership with Blockasset, the 36-year-old Derby boss has even changed his Twitter profile picture to one of the portraits.

Rooney said: “Very excited to announce that I am now a partner in Blockasset.

“Follow Blockasset for full updates on my upcoming NFTs as part of the Legends generative NFT collection.”

Blockasset are as equally excited about their collection.

In a statement, they said: “It is inspired by childhood memories of opening sports cards and stickers, not knowing which athlete you’ll land.”

Rooney isn’t the only ex-pro who has got into NFTs.

Chelsea and England legend John Terry has linked up with ApeKidsClub.

Terry’s cartoon collection is of apes in football card style.

NFTs are, however, seen as risky investments with the value depending on which type of blockchain code they are based on.

The Financial Conduct Authority watchdog has warned investors to ‘be prepared to lose their money.’

They said: “Cryptoassets are unregulated and high-risk. We have repeatedly warned people should be prepared to lose their money.”
