Novak Djokovic slams Wimbledon decision to ban Russia and Belarus players and says ‘it’s not the athletes’ fault’

NOVAK DJOKOVIC criticised Wimbledon organisers’ decision to ban Russian and Belarusian tennis players from the competition.

The All England Club decided to bar stars from those two nations for the tournament, which starts on June 27, including World No2 Daniil Medvedev.

Tennis chiefs came to that decision after Russia’s unjust invasion of Ukraine.

Djokovic, though, is against the ban as he claims the athletes can’t be blamed for the war.

The World No1, who was the subject of controversy in January when he was deported from Australia and refused to compete because he was unvaccinated, insists he is against the war.

The Serbian star understands the trauma it causes after growing up in war-stricken Yugoslavia.

Djokovic said: “I will always be the first one to condemn the war.

“As a child of war, I know what kind of emotional trauma a war leaves.

“Us in Serbia, we know what was happening here in 1999, ordinary people always suffer, we’ve had a lot of wars in the Balkans.

“That being said, I cannot support the Wimbledon decision.

“It’s not the athletes’ fault.

“When politics interfere with sports, it usually doesn’t turn out well.”
