Man Utd in Frenkie de Jong transfer blow as Barcelona ace ‘wants Champions League’ and not just Premier League next year

MANCHESTER UNITED transfer target Frenkie de Jong wants Champions League football next season – throwing his move to Old Trafford in doubt.

New Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag is rumoured to be keen on bringing the midfielder to the club, having worked with him at Ajax.

However a transfer could now be in doubt as the Barcelona star is desperate to play for a team in the Champions League, not just the Premier League.

“Frenkie is a quality player, he’s very important and we will go from situation to situation.

“We are conditioned by financial fair play, conditioned by the situation inherited by the club.”

With Man Utd seemingly heading to the Europa League, if results go their way on Sunday, the player could go elsewhere.

One of the other clubs interested in the 25-year-old is United’s rivals Man City.

SunSport exclusively revealed last week that De Jong was willing to write off £6m in unpaid wages in order to clinch a move to the blue half of Manchester.

Pep Guardiola is believed to be a big fan of the player.

Any club signing de Jong could have to pay a figure of at least £65million.
