I’m an England fan and support Man Utd – but I’ll be playing against them for Hungary after switching allegiance

CALLUM STYLES spent last summer with his mates cheering on England at the Euros.

And tonight the Manchester United-supporting midfielder will be taking on the Three Lions — and hoping he faces Harry Maguire.

Callum Styles is an England fan – but plays for Hungary

Bury–born Styles, 22, switched his allegiance after discovering he had a Hungarian grandmother.

The Barnsley star, who made his Magyars debut in March’s 1–0 friendly win over Northern Ireland, declared: “I’m still as English as any of the lads we’ll be facing.

“I remember watching the European Championship final last year in Manchester in a pub and nobody was more gutted than me when we lost out to Italy.

“Back then I didn’t know about my Hungarian roots — now I believe I could also have qualified to play for Poland, too.

“But Hungary approached me and the head coach Marco Rossi has been brilliant, as have been my international team-mates.

“Make no mistake, I’m still English and I’m still an England fan.

“But for this game and the return on June 14, I’ll be giving everything for the Magyars.

“I’m a lifelong United fan so I’m hoping Harry will be on the pitch.

“It will still be a  surreal experience facing England. There was a time when I thought maybe it would happen for me with England but I’ve been given an alternative and I’m loving it.”

Styles is hoping his new international status will lead to the Prem.

After snubbing Nottingham Forest and Blackburn in January, he has been told by Barnsley he is free to look for a move, with Hungarians Ferencvaros already making contact.

Styles added: “I spoke with the CEO and he accepts it is time for a new challenge.

“I’m fortunate because we’ve not only got England twice this month but also Italy and Germany.

“Playing for England never happened for me but now I’m an international and, fingers crossed, the next three games might lead me to a Premier League club.”
