Ex-Arsenal ace Emmanuel Adebayor stuck in Benin after fleeing Paraguay to be with family in Togo amid coronavirus crisis

The ex-Arsenal, Man City and Tottenham striker was headed back to West Africa but got held up after a stop over in Cotonou and will have to isolate in a hotel for 15 days with 84 other passengers.

The 36-year-old only signed for new club Olimpia Asuncion in February and has failed to score since.

After an initial flight to Paris, the Togolese hopped on another plane headed for Benin, which borders his home nation.

But having landed at Cardinal Bernardin Gantin International Airport, Adebayor learned of the local isolation protocol which will see him holed up just over a hundred miles from his family in Togo.

However, the imposing striker spoke to local media when he landed and said he remained unfazed.

He said: “My quarantine in Lomé (Togo), like in Benin, is to feel at home, it doesn’t bother me at all.”

Olimpia also released a statement.

It read: “Emmanuel Adebayor made the decision to return to his country to spend the government-declared quarantine time.

“As an institution, we have informed him of the risks that this entails, but his decision was to spend this time with his family.”

Earlier this month, Adebayor gave his new fans a glimpse of what they are in for when he was sent off for KARATE KICKING an opponent.

Supporters briefly forgot about his lack of goals as they watched him dabble in kung fu.

The ref immediately showed the former Real Madrid striker a red for the wild lunge.

After the game Adebayor himself labelled the tackle a “Jackie Chan challenge”.

He wrote on Twitter: “Tough game today!

“‘What a great team spirit, and what a win boys.

“Sad to leave the pitch early on a Jackie Chan challenge.

“It was never my intention to hurt my opponent, and I am glad he is okay.”

Olimpia have two other ex-Premier League players in their ranks with former Blackburn and Man City star Roque Santa Cruz and ex-West Ham forward Brian Montenegro – who scored an 80th minute winner – also taking part in the game.

Having left Turkish side Kayserispor in December, Adebayor was without a club until he was snapped up by the Paraguayan champs.

He last played in England for Crystal Palace who he left in July 2016.
