Man Utd put ex-RB Leipzig boss Ralf Rangnick high on list of candidates to replace Solskjaer if Woodward axes boss

MANCHESTER UNITED have put former RB Leipzig boss Ralf Rangnick high on the list of candidates to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to reports.

The 61-year-old tactician who has also previously coached Schalke, Stuttgart and Hoffenheim has been out of work since leaving the Bundesliga side in June.

Ralf Rangnick has been placed on Utd’s list of candidates to replace Solskjaer should he be axed

Rangnick was due to stay in Germany as Leipzig’s sporting director but the club brought in Markus Krosche instead, with Rangnick going to Red Bull as head of sport.

Bild journalist Christian Falk now says Rangnick – who got Leipzig promoted in 2016 – has emerged on United‘s radar after their disastrous start to the season.

He wrote: “According to our information, Ralf Rangnick is a candidate at @ManUtd. The former coach of Leipzig would be also interested in @FCBayern.”

The Red Devils remain just two points above the relegation zone despite an improved performance in the 1-1 draw against Liverpool last Sunday.

And executive vice chairman Ed Woodward recently gave his backing to the club hero by claiming he is a “walking, talking” version of the club’s philosophy.

But that hasn’t stopped rumblings that Solskjaer might not be up to the task of rebuilding United.

Curiously, though, Rangnick has previously warned the Old Trafford side about the dangers of chopping and changing managers too often.

He made the comments when being linked to the director of football role at the club.

Rangnick said: “I am happy where I am but if any club wanted to speak to me, the question would have to be: Can I be somebody who can influence areas of development across the whole club?

“Otherwise you are only getting half of what I am capable of.

“If, after that, you can work together in a trustworthy and respectful way, then you are more likely to be successful.

“Its always difficult to follow someone like Sir Alex Ferguson, who was so successful and in place for a long time and thats even harder if you are often changing coaches.”

Man Utd have also been linked with a new potential buyer in Mohammed bin Salman – the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia – should the Glazers opt to cash out.
