Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is set to be reunited with Frenkie de Jong at Old Trafford

Christian Eriksen is a free transfer target for the Red Devils as well as Brentford

The deal will see United cough up an initial £56m, with a further £18m to be paid in performance-related add-ons.

Ten Hag has made strengthening his midfield a priority after the club released the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata.

They are known to be keen on snapping up Denmark international Eriksen on a free transfer.

But the 30-year-old is mulling over his future as he debates whether to stay at Brentford following his impressive spell with the Bees in the second half of the 2021-22 season.

According to the Daily Star, United are set to wrap up the signing of De Jong shortly.

And they are hoping his arrival at the Theatre of Dreams will convince Eriksen to join Ten Hag’s project.

Former Ajax gaffer is keen to bring in his targets early as he hopes new signings will join them on United’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia next month.

The Red Devils will jet east on July 8.

Should United manage to bring in both De Jong and Eriksen, it has been said that Ten Hag will then look to raid former employers Ajax for winger Antony.

Though they have insisted that the 22-year-old will not be cheap as the Eredivisie champions hold out for a fee in the region of £69million.

However United are reluctant to fork over that much money and will negotiate with Ajax over a lower fee.

United are also closing in on Feyernood left-back Tyrell Malacia after hijacking Lyon’s move for the defender.

A £13m fee is believed to have been agreed with the Eredivisie outfit, which could rise to £14.6m.
