Liverpool ‘made shock Raheem Sterling transfer swoop’ before Chelsea sealed £45m deal for Man City star

LIVERPOOL were allegedly interested in a controversial move to bring Raheem Sterling back to the club before he agreed to join Chelsea.

The England star, 27, is on the verge of completing his £45m transfer from Manchester City to the Blues and becoming Thomas Tuchel’s first summer recruit.

Liverpool were reportedly keen to bring Raheem Sterling back to Anfield

Liverpool fans were furious when Sterling forced through his move to Man City in 2015

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain were all interested in securing the forward.

Now The Mirror claims that Sterling’s old club Liverpool were also in the hunt.

Reds supporters were furious when the star left Anfield for City back in 2015 after he forced through his £50m exit.

He has always endured a hot reception from the Kop since as the rivalry between the two clubs intensified over recent years.

Sterling has also not enjoyed the best of luck against his former employers, scoring just three goals against them and being involved in just five victories in 18 outings versus them.

He joined Liverpool from QPR aged 14 and burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old as part of the impressive attack that included Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

In total he scored 23 goals and produced 25 assists in 129 matches for them before switching to the Etihad.

Speaking to Sky Sports in 2020, he insists he was “disappointed” with how he left the Reds but was adamant that he had no regrets.

He said: “Sometimes you’ve got to know what you want. Your career is only short, you don’t really know what’s going to happen.

“At times, we make decisions and they might not be the right ones. Sometimes, it turns out for the better.

“The only thing I will say is the way it went about was the thing I am more disappointed about. But other than that, it’s been so far, so good.”

Sterling enjoyed great success at City and won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and an FA Cup, scoring 131 goals in 337 appearances.

But he has struggled for regular action under Pep Guardiola over the past 18 months and the arrivals of Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland have prompted him to seek a new challenge at Chelsea.
