Man City legend Sergio Aguero wanted by old club Independiente in return transfer as contract runs down at Etihad

ARGENTINE side Independiente want Sergio Aguero to return to the club.

The Manchester City legend, 31, started his career at his hometown outfit, joining aged nine and making his first-team debut aged just 15 years and 35 days.

Manchester City’s all-time record goalscorer Sergio Aguero is wanted by old club Independiente for an emotional return

And now with just one year left to run on his current contract, Independiente’s head coach is hopeful Aguero – as well as AC Milan midfielder Lucas Biglia – will make the emotional switch back to Buenos Aires before retiring.

Lucas Pusineri played alongside Aguero as the striker broke through.

He told Infierno Rojo: “With Sergio Aguero and Lucas Biglia I have a beautiful relationship.

“We were partners and I have a lot of respect for the trajectories they have taken with Argentina and in Europe as well.

“Of course it would be nice to have them tomorrow. In the future, it is hopeful to count on them.”

Aguero made 56 appearances for El Rojo, scoring 23 goals, before earning his record transfer to Atletico Madrid in 2006.

In Madrid he smashed in 101 in 234 across five years and signed for Manchester City in 2011 for £38million, sealing the Premier League title in dramatic fashion at the end of his first season.

He has played a crucial role in all four of City’s Premier League crowns with 180 top-flight goals in England, placing him fourth in the league’s history and as the top overseas hitman ahead of Thierry Henry.

And his tally of 254 strikes for the Etihad side – coming in 368 matches – makes him their all-time record goalscorer by 77.

Although he wants to at least honour the remainder of his contract in Manchester, by which time he will be 33, Aguero is certainly keen to head back and pull on the Independiente shirt again.

He previously stated: “I always try [to get back to Argentina]. I know what the fans [of Independiente] want, but I have a contract with City, and I try to focus on these two years I’ve got left.

“Then I’ll see what I’ll do but of course, the Rojo [Independiente] is my priority.”

There may have been links with David Beckham’s Inter Miami for a big-money swansong but it seems inevitable that if and when Aguero does decide to leave City, it would be for a final spell at his boyhood club.
