Rashford reveals his two Man Utd team-mates most like Scholes as striker admits it would be ‘dream’ to play with legend

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Paul Scholes and current star striker Marcus Rashford would love to have combined on the pitch for the Red Devils.

Scholes used to pick out strikers with ease during Manchester United’s glory days.

Rashford admits it would be a ‘dream’ to play with Scholes

Dwight Yorke, Andy Cole, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wayne Rooney are among the greats to have benefitted from Scholes vision.

And he clearly believes Rashford has the ability with his pace and movement to reach the lofty heights of those goalscoring greats.

Meanwhile, Rash says it would have been a “dream” to have played alongside the iconic midfielder.

Scholes said: “You look for a player who can come short but more importantly a player with pace, like Marcus has, speed and movement.

“You don’t need to look and these players sometimes, you don’t need to talk to them it’s just sometimes just a little look, you are on the ball, time and space, you see space over a centre-half.

“I know I can just dink it over a centre-half or over a full back and he’s got the speed to fly past someone and the composure to score a goal as well.”

Speaking to Manchester United’s Official Podcast, Scholes says he would study Rashford in reserve games before and realised then that United had a top class forward coming through.

He said: “I always remember watching him, mainly in the reserve team, and he was an out and out centre-forward.

“Sometimes I would go to games and just watch him, and not really watch where the ball was. I’d look for his movement – is he clever enough to have that link with a midfield player? I think he has that.

“I was really excited when he first got into the team, a little bit luckily at first – I think there was an injury to someone. But ever since he has got into the team, he has shown the talent he has got as a centre-forward or a player wide on the left.

“I always remember seeing him as a kid and I thought his intelligence and movement was as a centre-forward.

“He looked like an out-and-out number nine, but now when you see him in games, he seems to enjoy it more from the left-hand side.”

And which striker wouldn’t have loved to play with Scholes who retired from football in 2013.

Rashford, 22, is too young to have had that honour, making his first team debut three years later in 2016, but can imagine what it would have been like.

Rashford said:It would have been a dream to play with someone like that.

“The biggest thing for me is range of passing. Probably the closest thing to that was when Wazza (Wayne Rooney) was playing a bit deeper and it was just so enjoyable to play as a number nine in those games when he was playing in that position

“Similar with Carras (Michael Carrick) as well, as soon as they get the ball they look forward and want to play forward, not only to feet but in behind a lot of the time.

“As a forward that’s all you want. As long as someone is seeing the passes and trying to make them, that’s what you thrive on.”

Rashford was enjoying his best goalscoring campaign with 19, until his season was brought to a halt by a back injury in January.

He will now be fit for when the season resumes after the coronavirus lockdown.
