Wayne Rooney on Everton shortlist to become new boss along with Martinez and Dyche if under-fire Frank Lampard is sacked

WAYNE ROONEY may get a second chance to become Everton manager — with Frank Lampard’s position hanging by a thread.

The former Goodison prodigy is on supremo Farhad Moshiri’s list of potential candidates to replace Lampard following Tuesday’s 4-1 home humiliation by Brighton.

Former Toffees manager Roberto martinez is also in the running to replace Frank Lampard

That result left the Toffees 16th in the Premier League with just 15 points and only two off the bottom of the table.

Rooney, who played for Everton twice during his legendary career, is joined by former Belgium boss Roberto Martinez.

The Spaniard was the first of five managers to be sacked by Moshiri after he first began buying his way to a 94 per cent holding in the club in 2016.

Sean Dyche, out of work since being sacked by Burnley nine months ago, and Celtic’s Ange Postecoglu are other options.

Yet Rooney, currently head coach of DC United, is a personality that Moshiri and chairman Bill Kenwright know would help inspire their club’s disillusioned fans.

He is understood to have had talks with Kenwright 12 months ago while still trying to stop Derby from dropping into League One.

Lampard is fighting for his job after Toffees fans staged a mass walkout during the defeat to Brighton.

He is expected to still be in charge of Friday’s FA Cup third round clash at Manchester United.

But the pressure is mounting and another huge setback could prove costly.

Everton have suffered another setback after Aston Villa turned down their attempt to bring in striker Danny Ings on loan.
