Chris Smalling disbelief as ref gives last-minute penalty as ball smashes him in FACE in Roma vs Monchengladbach tie

ROMA loan star Chris Smalling is in ‘disbelief’ after conceding a crucial stoppage-time penalty for handling – when the ball smashed him in the face.

Borussia Monchengladbach stole a 1-1 Europa League draw in the 94th minute as Scottish referee William Collum’s blunder penalised Manchester United centre-back Smalling.

Ex-England ace Smalling tweeted a clip of the incident along with his stunned verdict: “Disbelief that this decision went against us…

“We deserved the 3 points, so disappointed…”

Scial media backed the 29-year-old all the way, calling it an “invented penalty” and a “disgraceful decision”.

Smalling jumped to defend a free-kick when the ball cannoned off Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi’s head next to him – and onto his own face.

CLEAR VIEW

Collum seemed to have a reasonably clear view of the scene ten metres away but inexplicably pointed to the spot.

Smalling at first appeared in shock at the verdict before joining in Roma’s protests.

But it was all in vain.

And Germany striker Lars Stindl stroked home the resulting penalty leveller.

Monchengladbach showed no embarrassment in their celebrations, speeding off to the corner flag for a gleeful huddle.

Italy midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo had put Serie A hosts Roma in front on 32 minutes.

And in the end the only consolation for Smalling was the support he received on Twitter.

One fan: “A real slap in the face that was, but Chris you were classy this evening. .. Forza Roma!”
