Both clubs were in League Two in the 2017/18 season and Luton were remarkably a non-league club just a decade ago.

Coventry fans will be ecstatic to see their team run out at Wembley on Saturday

Coventry beat Middlesborough 1-0 on aggregate to reach Wembley’s showpiece while Luton overcame Sunderland 3-2 across two legs.

The winner will join Burnley and Sheffield United, who finished first and second in the Championship, in the top flight.

Luton have been on an incredible rise through the divisions and the story starts when they were relegated out of League Two after beginning the season on -30 points due to administration.

They climbed their way back up under managers John Still, Mick Harford and Nathan Jones through the years.

Back-to-back promotions sent them from the fourth tier to the Championship in only two years.

Now manager Rob Edwards is hoping to guide the team, who finished third, to the top flight for the first time since 1992.

As for Coventry, the journey is just as good.

They were relegated to League Two in 2018 after a dispute with owners in previous seasons, which led to them being booted out their stadium for a year and sent 35 miles down the road to Northampton.

Mark Robins has been manager of the Sky Blues since they were in the fourth tier and has guided them to two promotions, one coming after a nervous wait when the 2019/20 campaign was curtailed due to Covid-19.

The ex-Manchester United star helped the club through more turmoil when in the Championship after another stadium issue led to them ground-sharing with Birmingham in 2020/21.

Coventry managed to finish fifth in the Championship this year.
