Summerghand makes up for string of near misses to win the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood

THE luckless Summerghand finally had his day in the sun when winning the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood.

David O’Meara’s speedster has had a series of near-misses in big handicaps, most recently when beaten a nose in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot.

Summerghand swooped late in the Stewards’ Cup

But he flew home late to defy top-weight and land the £75,000 feature on the final day of the Glorious meeting.

The 27-runner field split into three groups in the early stages, with Danny Tudhope sitting chilly out the back on the eventual winner.

Well-punted pair Meraas (11-2), who led on the far side, and Nahaarr (3-1f) were sending out distress signals with well over a furlong to run as Kimifive (11-1) swept into the lead.

Tudhope needed a clean run from out the back to stand any chance, and he gaps appeared in time as Summerghand weaved his way through to lead in the shadows of the post at 22-1.
