Ex-Arsenal star Chris Willock to join Huddersfield in £1m transfer from Benfica after successful loan spell

FORMER Arsenal star Chris Willock is set to join Huddersfield from Benfica after his successful loan spell at the club.

The two clubs have agreed on a deal said to be worth around £1million, though personal terms with Willock have not yet been finalised.

Willock has impressed while on loan at Huddersfield

He began last season on loan at West Brom, before joining the Terriers in January.

He went on to make 14 appearances for them, including eight starts, and scored two goals.

They have lost some of their attacking players this summer including the likes of Steve Mounie, and with Karlan Grant’s future still uncertain, the acquisition of Willock will be a welcome one.

The fans have already built a bond with Willock after he scored the goal that effectively kept them in the division in their last home game of the previous season.

The 22-year-old came through the Arsenal ranks before leaving for Benfica in 2017.

While at Benfica, he made 64 appearances for their B-team in Portugal’s second tier, scoring 14 times and providing nine assists.

He has also had a promising start to his England career, and has played for the Under-16 through to Under-20 level.

His performances have attracted a number of clubs such as Rangers, Derby, QPR and Bournemouth, who are also monitoring his situation.

Rangers were the most keen on sigining Willock and had hoped on the youngster to Ibrox before the transfer window closes.

Steven Gerrard’s side have Ianis Hagi and Ryan Kent as their first choice wide options but need more cover up-front.

Willock has two brothers that he started out in Arsenal’s academy with, one who is still there, Joe, and Matty, who went on to join Gillingham.
