Essex to provide cultural diversity education after Muslim player was sprayed with alcohol during cup win celebrations

ESSEX County Cricket Club have promised to provide cultural diversity education after a Muslim player was soaked with alcohol during their title celebrations.

Batsman Feroze Khushi, 12th man during the Bob Willis Trophy final win over Somerset, was seen recoiling as beer was poured over him by team-mate Will Buttleman on the balcony at Lord’s.

Essex said the actions of 21-year-old Khushi’s team-mates fell short of the club’s values and vowed to do more – but stopped short of apologising for what happened.

A statement from the club read: “Essex County Cricket Club prides themselves on their work within multi-diverse communities throughout the county and the surrounding areas.

“For a substantial period of time, Essex have had a multi-diverse team with players from different backgrounds, religions, and races, where cricket is at the heart of these communities.

“The club has worked extremely hard and will continue to bring cricket to anybody and everybody, and educate on diversity, but further work needs to be done across both sport and society in general, to widen people’s knowledge and make them more aware of cultural differences.”

However, Sajid Patel, the co-founder of the National Cricket League in Essex and East London, demanded an apology.

He told The Telegraph: “There is still no apology which is why I am not satisfied.

“There is wrongdoing that has happened and Essex have admitted a mistake has been made, but there has not been an apology.

“There is a player cornered on the balcony with nowhere to go and the worse thing is a player has seen him try to dodge things and has poured a beer on him.

“When you look at England celebration when they won the World Cup, they had a plan of action with Moeen [Ali] and [Adil] Rashid.

“They picked up the trophy and as soon as ready to pop the champagne they let Moeen and Adil know and they leave.

“If the England team can get this right, setting a great example, why is that counties cannot do this correctly?”
