Hollie Doyle finishes third at BBC SPOTY to do entire racing community proud after breakthrough 2020

HOLLIE DOYLE came third in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award after her breakthrough year.

The 24-year-old jockey, the only woman on the shortlist, finished behind Jordan Henderson and winner Lewis Hamilton.

Doyle with boyfriend and fellow jockey Tom Marquand

Doyle did the entire racing community proud after being the first jockey to be nominated since AP McCoy in 2013.

She was joined at the ceremony by boyfriend and fellow jockey Tom Marquand.

Doyle was as much as 33-1 to win just a few days ago before a tidal wave of support saw her odds plummet.

She went as low as 9-4 – and second-favourite behind F1 world champion Hamilton – before being voted into third.

It is still a remarkable achievement for the athlete who had the smallest national profile of the six-strong shortlist.
