Here are some basic skills in boxing

How to box effectively

Boxing is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is made up of two competitors who aim to knock the head off each other. The rules of boxing vary from country to country. In general, there are three types of boxing; Amateur, Professional and Olympic boxing.

Amateur boxing may be done at school, college, and university. This form of boxing involves sparring with no protection and using padded gloves. Usually amateur boxing competitions consist of three rounds of five minutes each. There are many types of amateur boxing: Kickboxing, Muay Thai and Taekwondo.

Professional boxing is usually practiced in gyms, clubs or stadiums. They wear protective equipment such as mouthpiece, nose guard, shin guards, elbow pads, knee pads, waist belt and groin protector. Professional boxing competitions consist of six rounds lasting four minutes each. There are many styles of professional boxing: Boxing, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), Kickboxing and Muay Thai.

Olympic boxing takes place at the Olympics. Boxers wear special protective gear, which must conform to international standards. Each round lasts three minutes and is made up of eight rounds. Only two types of Olympic boxing are available: Light Flyweight or Heavyweight.

The basic skills of boxing are:

  • Techniques for punching
  • Guarding techniques
  • Footwork
  • Stance
  • Body movement
  • Defense
  • Combination
  • Rotation
  • Spare parts

Punching Techniques

There are seven types. Each punch comes with its own technique. Some punches require greater strength than others. A strong uppercut for example requires a lot of force. However, a straight punch is much more powerful and faster than other punches.

There are many combinations that can be used to punch. These are combinations of punches which work together to achieve a goal. A combination may have multiple parts. A left hook followed with a right-cross will cause injury to the opponent’s jaw.

Guard Techniques

A boxer protects himself by using his body. He does this using his legs and arms, elbows as well as hands, knees and feet.

Legs

Boxers must use their legs to defend themselves against kicks. After receiving a kick, he will raise his leg and move away from the attacker. If the attacker is coming from the front, he will bend at the knees to avoid getting kicked on either side. But if the attack comes in the back, he will stand straight and block the kick using his foot.

Elbows

Because they cause great pain, elbow strikes are extremely effective. An elbow strike can be delivered either directly or indirectly. Directly refers to hitting your opponent with the forearm, while indirect means you hit him using another part of your arms.

Hands

Boxers use their hands to block incoming blows. To do this, they raise their fists higher than their heads and move their arms in the direction that the attack is coming. Then they make contact with the attacker’s fist.

Knees

Boxers should bend their knees when receiving blows to the abdomen, stomach, or chest. Knee strikes can be used to defend yourself.

Feet

A boxer should not be afraid to respond to an attack. This will help him gain distance from his opponent. In addition, when delivering a counter-attack, a boxer should keep his balance.

Stances

In order to box effectively, a boxer needs to establish a stance. His stance will determine how he defends. It defines where he faces his opponent and how he positions his body. Boxers have many stances to choose from. Here are some of the more popular ones:

  • Low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

The Body Movement

In order to win a fight, a boxer must move around his opponent. This involves changing position, speed and rhythm.

Rotation

Rotating his arm to increase the puncher’s reach is a key part of boxing. Depending on the type and size of punch, the speed at which the rotation takes place varies.

Combinations

The timing of each punch determines the effectiveness of a combination. A combination is good if it starts with a strong punch then ends with a weaker one.

Spare parts

Sparring is an exercise session to improve boxing skills. Boxers learn to train their mind and bodies during sparring sessions. Sparring is a way to learn how to fight without getting hurt.

Learning to box takes dedication and patience. You need to train hard and long in order to become a better boxer.
