Amir Khan and Mario Kindelan: From Rivals to Friends
Amir Khan, the legendary British boxer, has made headlines once again with his incredible act of generosity towards his former Olympic rival, Mario Kindelan. Khan, who lost to Kindelan in the 2004 Athens Olympics, recently reunited with him at an event in Bahrain. What happened next left everyone amazed.
A Rematch that Drew Millions of Viewers
The rematch between Khan and Kindelan, which took place a year after their Olympic encounter, was not your typical amateur contest. It was aired on ITV and drew a staggering 6.3 million viewers. This was a testament to Khan's growing popularity and the anticipation surrounding the fight.
Amir Khan: A Boxing Legend
Although Khan lost to Kindelan in the Olympics, he went on to become a true legend of British boxing. He held the unified light-welterweight champion title and faced some of the sport's biggest stars, including Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford. However, Khan retired in 2022 after a defeat to his bitter enemy, Kell Brook.
Kindelan's Journey: Stuck in the Amateur Code
Unlike Khan, Kindelan was never able to turn professional due to the ban on professional boxing in his homeland of Cuba. Introduced by Fidel Castro in 1962, the ban restricted Cubans to amateur boxing. Although the ban was lifted just last year, it came too late for Kindelan, who is now 52 years old.
The Gold Medal that Held a Special Meaning
During their reunion, Kindelan offered to sell his Olympic gold medal to Khan in order to buy his mother a home. However, Khan declined the offer and instead donated $5,000 (£3,900) to Kindelan. Khan expressed his belief that the gold medal should remain with its rightful owner, who had earned it through hard work and dedication.
Amir Khan's Generosity Shines Through
Amir Khan, known for his charitable work through several foundations, has once again captured the hearts of fans with his incredible gesture towards Kindelan. Fans took to social media to praise Khan, calling him a "class act" and "absolute class." It's clear that Khan's kindness and compassion extend beyond the boxing ring.
