Anthony Joshua training harder for Jermaine Franklin fight than Oleksandr Usyk clash ahead of ring return

ANTHONY JOSHUA is training even harder for the fight against Jermaine Franklin than he did for the bout versus Oleksandr Usyk.

The 33-year-old London 2012 legend lost his WBA, IBF and WBO world titles to the Ukraine ace in 2021 and failed to regain them with a much-improved 2022 rematch performance.

Oleksandr Usyk beat Anthony Joshua twice

The rebuild begins at the O2 on April 1 and AJ admits he would be a fool to ever underestimate an opponent again.

He said “I have to take Franklin even more seriously than I did Usyk.

“Not comparing them, but now I just know better.

“What I went through and how I trained was not enough, so I now know that I have to put even more pressure on myself to perform better.

“As long as I am fighting, I am going to have this level of self-expectation to improve as a fighter.

“I know Jermaine Franklin is working in the trenches right now, so I have to remember that this is still a real fight.

“Just because Jermaine Franklin is not yet a big-name brand, it does not mean he cannot perform.”

New trainer Derrick James, who is rebuilding AJ at his Dallas gym, has been impressed with everything he has seen from his new student.

“He’s a real guy, genuine and cool to be around. I told him at the start I would not be his cheerleader and he has never had a problem with that.”

Punching Techniques

There are seven kinds of punches: Left Hook, Right Hook, Uppercut, Cross, Straight, Overhand and Underhand. Each punch has its own technique. Some punches need more power than others. A strong uppercut for example requires a lot of force. A straight punch on the other side requires less power, but is more effective than other punches.

There are also different combinations. These are combinations made up of several punches that can be used together to achieve one goal. A combination can contain multiple parts. For example, a left hook followed by a right cross will cause damage to the opponent’s jaw.

Guard Techniques

A boxer protects himself by using his body. He does this by using his legs.

Legs

Boxers must use their legs to defend themselves against kicks. He raises his leg when he is hit with a kick and then moves away from the opponent. To avoid being kicked on his side, he will bend his knees if the attack is from the front. He will block the kick with his foot if the attack is coming from behind.

Elbows

Elbow strikes are very powerful because they inflict great pain. An elbow strike can be delivered either directly or indirectly. Directly means you hit your opponent directly with your forearm. While indirectly, it means you hit him with another section of your arm.

Hands

Boxers use both their hands and arms to prevent incoming blows. To do this, they raise their fists higher than their heads and move their arms in the direction that the attack is coming. Then they make contact with the attacker’s fist.

Knees

A boxer should bend his knees in order to absorb any blows to his stomach, abdomen, chest or stomach. For defense purposes, knee strikes are common.

Feet

When attacked, a boxer should step back and deliver counter-attacks. This way, he can gain distance between himself and his opponent. Additionally, boxers need to maintain their balance when they counter-attack.

Stances

To box effectively, a boxer must establish a stance. His stance determines how he defends himself. It determines his position and the direction he will face. Boxers have many options for stances. Here are some of the more popular ones:

  • A low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

Body Movement

In order to win a fight, a boxer must move around his opponent. This involves changing positions, speed, rhythm and timing.

Rotation

To increase his punching power, a boxer rotates when he throws a punch. You can rotate at different speeds depending upon the punch.

Combinations

The timing of each punch determines the effectiveness of a combination. A combination is good if it starts with a strong punch then ends with a weaker one.
