Olympic boxing takes place at the Olympics. International standards require that boxers use special protective gear. Each round lasts three minutes and is made up of eight rounds. There are only two styles of Olympic boxing; Light Flyweight and Heavyweight.

Boxing is based on the following skills:

  • Punching techniques
  • Guarding techniques
  • Footwork
  • Stance
  • The body moves
  • Defense
  • Combination
  • Rotation
  • Spares

Punching Techniques

There are seven types: Left Hook (right hook), Right Hook (uppercut), Cross (cross), Straight, Overhand, Underhand. Each punch comes with its own technique. Some punches require more strength than others. An uppercut, for instance, requires tremendous strength. However, a straight punch is much more powerful and faster than other punches.

There are also many combinations. These are combinations which combine several punches in order to achieve a specific goal. One combination can have many parts. For example, a left hook followed by a right cross will cause damage to the opponent’s jaw.

Guard Techniques

Boxers protect themselves by protecting their bodies. He does this using his legs and arms, elbows as well as hands, knees and feet.

Legs

Boxers should use their legs to defend against kicks. If he gets kicked, he raises one leg and turns away from his attacker. If the attacker is coming from the front, he will bend at the knees to avoid getting kicked on either side. He will block the kick with his foot if the attack is coming from behind.

Elbows

Because elbow strikes inflict a lot of pain, they are very effective. You can either deliver an elbow strike directly, or indirectly. Directly means you hit your opponent directly with your forearm. While indirectly, it means you hit him with another section of your arm.

Hands

Boxers use their hands as a shield against incoming punches. To do so, they raise their fists above their head and move them towards the direction of the attack. They then make contact with their attacker’s fist.

Knees

When receiving a blow to the stomach, abdomen or chest, a boxer should bend his knees to absorb the impact. Defense purposes are often served by knee strikes.

Feet

When attacked, a boxer should step back and deliver counter-attacks. This way, he can gain distance between himself and his opponent. Boxers should also keep their balance when counter-attacking.

Stances

In order to box effectively, a boxer needs to establish a stance. His stance determines how he defends himself. It is how he positions himself and where he faces the opponent. There are many stances available to boxers. These are some of our most favorite:

  • Low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

Move your body

To win a fight, a fighter must move around the opponent. This includes changing speed, position and rhythm.

Rotation

Boxers rotate their arms when they throw a punch. Depending on the type and size of punch, the speed at which the rotation takes place varies.

Combinations

The timing of each individual punch affects the effectiveness or failure of a combination. A combination of strong and weak punches will produce a good result.

Spares

Sparring is a form of boxing that aims to improve your skills. Sparring is a training session that helps a boxer train his mind and body. The goal of sparring is to learn to fight, and not to get hurt.

It is important to be patient and dedicated when learning how to box. To become a better fighter, you have to train hard and continue to work.
