British boxer Joshua Buatsi has revealed that he turned down a lucrative offer from boxing legend Floyd Mayweather in order to finish his university degree. Mayweather was impressed by Buatsi's performance in the 2016 Olympics, where he won a bronze medal for Team GB. However, Buatsi made the decision to prioritize his education and continue boxing in England.
Education First
Despite the opportunity to sign with Mayweather, Buatsi chose to complete his degree at St Mary's University in Twickenham. He had just one year left of studies when the offer came, and felt it was important to finish his education before making any major career moves.
American Dream
While Buatsi acknowledges the potential for money and success in America, he wanted to establish himself as a professional boxer in England and connect with British fans. He ultimately declined Mayweather's offer and focused on his last year of university.
Brains and Brawn
Buatsi went on to graduate with a 2:1 degree in Management with Sports Science. He then turned pro in 2017 under promoter Eddie Hearn. Since then, he has built an impressive 17-0 record and is considered one to watch in the sport.
The Biggest Fight Yet
Next, Buatsi will face his friend Dan Azeez in a London derby at the O2 Arena on October 21. The winner of the bout will be next in line for the WBA title, currently held by Dmitry Bivol. Buatsi recognizes the significance of this fight and is determined to come out on top.
