Family Ties

Jai Opetaia, the undefeated cruiserweight champion, comes from a long line of fighters on both sides of his family. His dad's side boasts four generations of fighters, while his mom's side includes three generations.

A Premier League Connection

But what's even more surprising is Opetaia's connection to Everton legend Tim Cahill. The two are cousins through marriage, although they aren't super close. Opetaia says he has a great bond with Cahill's brothers.

Inspiration or Coincidence?

Opetaia's impressive boxing skills have sparked speculation that he may have inspired Cahill's trademark celebration of boxing the corner flag. However, Opetaia jokingly denies any influence and admits he doesn't watch much football.

A Childhood in the Gym

Opetaia's upbringing in Sydney revolved around the gym. By the age of eight, he had already had his first boxing bout. Fighting was all he knew, and he excelled in various contact sports, but boxing was always his true calling.

Rise to Professional Boxing

Opetaia represented Australia as an amateur boxer, winning medals at the junior and youth levels. Although he was eliminated in the opening round of the 2012 Olympics in London, he turned professional in 2015. His big break came in 2022 when he dethroned Mairis Briedis for the IBF and Ring Magazine belts.

A Huge Opportunity

Opetaia's career will reach new heights on December 23 when he defends his titles against Ellis Zorro in Saudi Arabia. The fight will take place on the same card as Anthony Joshua's bout against Otto Wallin and Deontay Wilder's return against Joseph Parker. Opetaia sees this as a massive opportunity to boost his profile and bank account.

A Future in the Heavyweight Division

The ambitious Opetaia has his sights set on moving up to the heavyweight division in the future. He's excited about the prospect of fighting for world titles in that weight class and sees his upcoming fight in Saudi Arabia as a chance to scout potential opponents.

Opetaia is confident that the future holds limitless possibilities for his boxing career, whether it's facing Dmitry Bivol in the cruiserweight division or moving up to heavyweight.
