Canelo Alvarez set for blockbuster fight with Russian Dmitry Bivol with Ukraine invasion having ‘no bearing’ on plans

EDDIE HEARN is adamant Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will have ‘no bearing’ on Canelo Alvarez’s fight with Dmitry Bivol.

Canelo is set to challenge for the Russian’s WBA light-heavyweight title on May 7 in Las Vegas.

But the announcement came amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leaving the impact on future fights unclear.

Oleksandr Usyk’s proposed rematch with Anthony Joshua now remains a doubt also.

Eddie Hearn said on iFL TV: “People keep saying would this affect Canelo against Bivol? Would this affect Oleksandr Usyk?

“I can’t tell you what Oleksandr Usyk is thinking in his mind. But for me, the answer is no.

“I would guess Oleksandr Usyk will start camp in about four week’s time.

“I guess, like Dmitry Bivol who will start camp in Los Angeles this weekend or on Monday – if that’s what’s required of Usyk, he will do the same.”

But Hearn added: “It’s a very sensitive subject and I can’t tell you what certain individuals are doing, whose country is at war.

“But I don’t expect it to have any bearing on Anthony Joshua versus Oleksandr Usyk.”

Ukraine unified heavyweight champion has now taken up arms in Ukraine’s desperate fight against Vladimir Putin’s Russia.

Usyk has joined the Kyiv Territorial Defence and slung a machine gun over his giant shoulder.
