The Russian, 40, was twice floored in round four only to close the show with a massive left hand in the fifth.
Povetkin tucked up and unloaded with a savage lead uppercut that instantly left Whyte out cold on the canvas.
The loss comes in the same week the WBC announced Tyson Fury was mandated to face Whyte.
