Gennady Golovkin says Chris Eubank Jr’s fight callout ‘just looks cheap’ but refuses to rule out UK return

GENNADY GOLOVKIN said Chris Eubank Jr’s fight callout ‘just looks cheap’ but refused to rule out a return to UK shores.

Eubank Jr, who fights domestic rival Liams Williams in Cardiff tonight, has made it no secret Golovkin is his No1 target this year.

But the Kazakh has payed little attention to the challenge, which has come from one of several middleweight hopefuls looking to prize GGG into the ring.

Golovkin, 39, told Sky Sports: “I have stopped paying attention to people calling me out.

“It’s the same thing. People claim things, they say that they have certain arrangements.

“It just looks cheap. It’s not worth my attention at all.”

Eubank Jr, 32, was in talks to fight the middleweight legend in 2016 before talks broke down.

Kell Brook, 35, instead jumped up from welterweight to bravely welcome Golovkin to the O2 Arena, but lost in five rounds.

GGG has fond memories of his trip to London and opened the door to returning once more.

He said: “I remember coming to the UK. I liked that night, I enjoyed it. It was an entertaining fight.

“I would not limit myself to any individual country. It depends on many factors.

“I’m sure the conditions offered for a fight in the United States or in my home country of Kazakhstan would not be any worse than those offered in the UK.

“So let’s be realistic.”

Golovkin was due to unify his IBF title with the WBA version held by Japan’s Ryota Murata, 36.

But the fight, set to be staged in Saitama in December, was postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic.

It has yet to be rescheduled, leaving Golovkin available for Eubank Jr, if he beats Welshman Williams, 29.

And the son of British boxing icon Chris Sr is adamant he will be too relentless for GGG, who turns 40 in April.

Eubank Jr said: “I really and truly believe I would stop him.

“My engine and his fight style? He doesn’t back down and goes to war regardless.

“An immovable force against an unstoppable object. When two warriors collide who put it all on the line, it would be an amazing fight.

“I don’t believe he could out-punch or out-perform me. I’ve had that mindset for years now.

“I have the perfect style to stop Golovkin even though it’s never been done before.”
