GERVONTA DAVIS is hoping to tread the same, undefeated path as his mentor Floyd Mayweather.

The WBA lightweight champ will defend his belt against wily veteran Leo Santa Cruz this weekend.

Davis is already a two-weight champ, and has won three world belts along the way.

And there are already being comparison made between him and his trainer Mayweather.

Their records at the same age are pretty similar.

By the age of 25 Mayweather was already a world champion and had KO’d 20 of his 27 opponents.

That gave him a 74 per cent KO percentage.

Floyd Mayweather is hoping to train Gervonta Davis to bypass his own brilliant legacy

Mayweather has recently revealed his ‘ultimate goal’ is to get his protege to surpass his incredible 50-0 career.

The American legend retired in 2017 after beating UFC star Conor McGregor, and despite teasing a comeback, has focussed his efforts on promoting.

Davis, signed to Mayweather Promotions, is one of the 43-year-old’s biggest stars.

And he has such high hopes for his unbeaten fighter, he wants to see Davis go on to better his own legacy.

Mayweather told Showtime: “Before I was a fighter/promoter. Now, it’s just all promoting.

“This young man right here, a natural born superstar. I would say I’m the god of this s***, I’m the don of this s***, I’m the LeBron of this s***.

“But the ultimate goal is to get him to surpass me.”

Davis has not fought since beating Yuriorkis Gamboa in December to win the WBA ‘Regular’ lightweight belt.

He moves back down to super-featherweight on his return to the ring against Santa Cruz.

It was initially set for October 24 behind closed doors, but moved a week to accommodate a limited 11,500 fans at San Antonio’s Alamodome stadium.
