Has boxing icon Tyson Fury retired?

BOXING legend Tyson Fury has decided to put an end to his illustrious career by hanging up his gloves – or has he?

The Gypsy King announced that his sixth round knock-out on Dillian Whyte would be the last time fans would get to see him fight competitively

And Fury has claimed that there is nothing left for him to prove in boxing.

However, this isn’t the first time the WBC champion has claimed retirement from the sport.

Has Tyson Fury retired?

The six foot nine machine revealed after the pummelling on Dillian Whyte at Wembley, that only an exhibition bout could get him back in the ring.

And Fury’s retirement plan has been supported by his trainer SugarHill Steward, who revealed that Fury’s retirement stems from big fights failing in his career.

Steward mentioned that politics deterred Tyson from getting the fights that he really wanted.

Which became mentally draining over time for the heavyweight champion.

So despite the Gypsy King never achieving undisputed status, Fury felt that winning all the belts at one stage is more than enough.

Which big fight fell through?

Fury was meant to face Anthony Joshua in a highly-anticipated clash last year but the fight fell through and Fury is said to be fed up by constant disappointments.

The Gypsy King believed that it never went ahead because he faced a £58million lawsuit if he didn’t fight Deontay Wilder.

Tyson overlooked his contractual obligation to have a trilogy encounter with the Bronze Bomber – which he went on to win after the date got of October 9, 2021 got pencilled in.

AJ was fuming about the situation as he believed that he was being led on about the biggest fight in British boxing history.

In an interview with former Manchester United star Gary Neville, Fury stated: “I was never very optimistic about that AJ fight happening.

“But all of a sudden, ‘It’s my fault, I don’t want to fight ’cause I’m a s***house’. Please.

“I’ll fight him on here now and flatten him.”

What has been said about the retirement?

Tyson Fury’s trainer SugarHill Steward spoke to Sky Sports in depth about the reasoning behind the Gypsy King’s retirement.

Steward said: “For him being retired I’m happy because that’s what he wants.

“I know a lot of the retirement has to do with not getting the fights he wants and it’s really mentally challenging to be offered fights and go through negotiations for fights and then for them to fall through at the end.

“These things happen to many fighters around the world. You wouldn’t expect it to happen on this big a stage but it does happen and it’s something fighters have to deal with.

“We on the outside sometimes don’t understand that. We just say ‘if he gets the fight he’ll come back’, it’s not as easy as being on the outside going through what happens on the inside.

“But it’s the sport he loves so much, and it’s hurting him like that. Those things have to be taken into consideration and respected.”
