Joe Joyce hopes style not resilience will lead him to victory over Joseph Parker

Joseph Parker looks relaxed mood as he attempts to dent the dreams of Joe Joyce

The WBO’s No 1 contender waited patiently for his shot at Oleksandr Usyk’s titles with a couple of keep-warm fights against Christian Hammer and Carlos Takam.

But the notoriously slow starter gave his fans a fright in both TKO wins.

And the painting puncher plans to show off his boxing artistry against Parker next Saturday.

The fine-art graduate said: “I’d like to stop relying on my chin, if I’m honest.

“I would prefer to move out of the way of punches or block or slip them and counter.

“I am always trying to improve my skills and biomechanics and that’s one thing I love about boxing, you can always improve.

“I’m sure Parker and his team  see a way of hurting me but we’ll see.”

Joyce was supposed to lose the November 2020 clash with Daniel Dubois but bludgeoned the prospect into  surrender after the build-up turned spiteful.

This time around the rivalry is far more mellow — for now.

Joyce said: “We are quite similar in a lot of ways. He’s friendly.

“It’s refreshing to be involved in a lead-up with an opponent like that.

“But I am sure he will get a lot more serious when the bell goes because I know I will.”

How to box effectively

Boxing has become a very popular sport. It is a fight between two opponents. Each country has its own rules. There are generally three types of boxing: Amateur, Professional, and Olympic.

Amateur boxing is often practiced at school, college, or university. This type includes sparring sessions using padded gloves, but without protection. Amateur boxing contests are usually three rounds in length, lasting five minutes each. Amateur boxing can be done in many styles, including Kickboxing and Muay Thai, Taekwondo or Karate, Judo, Wrestling, and Muay Thai.

Most professional boxing takes place in gyms, clubs, and stadiums. They are protected by protective equipment like a mouthpiece, nose protector, shinguards, elbow pads and knee pads, waist belt, and groin protection. Six rounds of professional boxing last four minutes each. There are several different styles of professional boxing including Boxing, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Taekwondo and others.

Olympic boxing takes place at the Olympics. International standards dictate that boxers must wear protective gear. The eight rounds last three minutes each and are held over eight rounds. Olympic boxing has only two styles, Light Flyweight vs Heavyweight.

Boxing is based on the following skills:

  • Punching techniques
  • Guarding techniques
  • Footwork
  • Stance
  • Body movement
  • Defense
  • Combination
  • Rotation
  • Spare parts

Punching Techniques

There are seven kinds of punches: Left Hook, Right Hook, Uppercut, Cross, Straight, Overhand and Underhand. Each punch is unique. Some punches need more power than others. For example, an uppercut is a powerful punch. However, a straight punch is much more powerful and faster than other punches.

There are also different combinations. These are combinations that combine punches to accomplish a particular goal. One combination can have many parts. A combination may include multiple parts. For example, damage to the jaw of an opponent can be caused by a left hook and a right cross.

Guard Techniques

A boxer uses his body to protect himself against attacks. He uses his arms, legs, elbows, knees, knees, and feet to do this.

Legs

Boxers must use their legs to defend themselves against kicks. When he’s hit, he raises his right leg and runs away from the attacker. To avoid being kicked on his side, he will bend his knees if the attack is from the front. If the attack comes from behind, however, he can stand straight up and block the kick by his foot.

Elbows

Elbow strikes are very effective because they inflict much pain. An elbow strike can be delivered directly or indirectly. Directly, you strike your opponent with your forearm. Indirectly, you hit him with another portion of your arm.

Hands

Boxers use their hands as a shield against incoming punches. To do this, they raise their fists higher than their heads and move their arms in the direction that the attack is coming. They then touch the attackers fist.

Knees

To absorb the impact of a punch to the stomach, abdomen, or chest, boxers should bend their knees. Knee strikes can be used to defend yourself.

Feet

Boxers should respond to being attacked by their opponent by standing back and delivering counter-attacks. This will help him gain distance from his opponent. Additionally, boxers need to maintain their balance when they counter-attack.

Stances

Boxing effectively requires a boxer to have a good stance. His stance will determine how he defends. It determines where he will face his opponent and how he will position his body. Boxers have many stances to choose from. These are some of our most favorite:

  • Low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

Body Movement

A boxer must change his position, speed and rhythm in order to win the fight. This includes changing speed, position and rhythm.

Rotation

To increase his punching power, a boxer rotates when he throws a punch. You can rotate at different speeds depending upon the punch.

Combinations

Timing of each punch is crucial to the effectiveness of a combination. A combination of strong and weak punches will produce a good result.

Spares

Sparring is an exercise session to improve boxing skills. Sparring allows a boxer to improve his mental and physical skills. Sparring is a way to learn how to fight without getting hurt.

To sum it all, boxing requires patience and dedication. To be a better boxer you need to train hard.
