‘It’s about AJ being comfortable’ – Eddie Hearn opens up on Anthony Joshua’s choice to change coach ahead of next fight

AJ announced Angel Fernandez – previously his assistant trainer – is now the main man in his corner.

But promoter Hearn did not rule other outsiders entering the team ahead of Joshua’s return this year.

He told iFL TV: “I’m sure there will be some other faces in the camp as well. He’s working well with Angel in Loughborough.

“Angel’s been a big part of the team for quite a few fights, it’s really about AJ being comfortable and happy, and he is in that position.”

Joshua, 32, first brought in Fernandez before beating Andy Ruiz Jr, 32, in their December 2019 rematch.

He has frequently been seen holding pads for the heavyweight superstar, acting as No2 before Rob McCracken.

AJ won gold under Team GB mastermind McCracken and became a two-time unified champion in the professional ranks.

But after his most recent loss to Oleksandr Usyk, 35, in September, Joshua was left considering his coaching team.

And after months of speculation, he confirmed Fernandez will be the man leading the charge.

Joshua said to Behind The Gloves: “I’m working with Angel Fernandez right now.

“In London and he’s been in my camp for the last three years anyway. He’s been at the last three of my world championship fights.”
