I’ve sparred Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte but none hit as hard as world champion LIGHTER than them

THOMAS CARTY is the heavyweight prospect making a name for himself for his secret sparring sessions with the biggest stars in boxing.

Carty is only 5-0, with four knockouts, but he has already shared the ring with the likes of Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury.

That is despite being managed by former world title challenger Dillian Whyte, who has boxed but been beaten by AJ and Fury.

So Carty finds himself in the middle of the warring British trio – but manages to stay out of the firing line.

He told SunSport: “It is a bit weird in fairness, it’s crazy to think I’m managed by Dillian, one of the top five guys but then I’ve sparred Fury, sparred AJ.

“I’ve been in with them all really from the top level bar Wilder, it’s a weird one but sparring is just work at the end of the day.

“And I’m really sought-after sparring, absolutely it’s a tight-knit community. There’s always people looking for me to go sparring with them.

“But unless it’s worth my while experience-wise or financially, I don’t really entertain it as much. I can’t be travelling sparring all the time.”

Carty’s slick southpaw style makes him an in-demand face among boxing’s most respected gyms.

And the only sparring partners missing from Carty’s elite list is Oleksandr Usyk, 36, and Deontay Wilder, 37.

He said: “I’ve sparred Hrgovic, Chisora, Bryant Jennings, I’ve sparred Lawrence Okolie.

“I’ve sparred obviously AJ, Dillian Whyte, Fury, sparred some other really top heavyweights, some European guys you probably haven’t heard of.

“I’ve sparred them all really, other than Usyk or Wilder.”

Fury, 34, hired Carty, 27, earlier in the year when he looked to be in line for an undisputed title fight with Usyk.

Talks were short lived but it allowed the Irishman to get a glimpse of greatness up close and personal.

He said: “Fury’s conditioning was really frightening, it was next level to be completely honest. It really surprised me.”

And despite trading leather with some super heavyweights, it is actually cruiserweight champ Okolie, 30, who left the biggest mark.

Carty said: “Lawrence Okolie has been one of the hardest hitters. He’s a  cruiserweight and a really, really sharp puncher.”

The Irishman returns on Saturday against eccentric Scot Jay McFarlane, 25, on Katie Taylor’s undercard.

Taylor, 36, challenges Chantelle Cameron, 32, for all super-lightweight titles in the first fight in Ireland since 2014.

It has inspired Carty to clean up the domestic titles before moving onto world honours.

He said: “After this, I really want to win the Irish title. Once I’ve collected the Celtic, title, then I want the Irish title to the collection.

“World rankings definitely, but I want to tidy things up domestically.

“People are skipping too much, I want to go after the Irish and the Celtic title and them move forward.

“I’m in absolutely no rush, I’m 27 years of age, with an experienced team everyone is getting me the right fights and the right time.”

How to box effectively

Boxing is a popular sport. It involves two people who attempt to knock each other out of their heads. The rules of boxing vary from country to country. In general, there are three types of boxing; Amateur, Professional and Olympic boxing.

Amateur boxing is usually practiced at school, college or university. This type of boxing includes sparring sessions with padded gloves and without any protection. Amateur boxing matches usually consist of three rounds lasting five minutes each. Amateur boxing can be done in many styles, including Kickboxing and Muay Thai, Taekwondo or Karate, Judo, Wrestling, and Muay Thai.

Boxing professionals are usually trained in clubs, gyms, or stadiums. They are protected by protective equipment like a mouthpiece, nose protector, shinguards, elbow pads and knee pads, waist belt, and groin protection. Six rounds of professional boxing last four minutes each. There are several different styles of professional boxing including Boxing, MMA (Mixed Martial Arts), Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Taekwondo and others.

Olympic boxing is practiced at the Olympics. International standards dictate that boxers must wear protective gear. Each round lasts three minutes and is made up of eight rounds. Olympic boxing can be divided into two types: Light Flyweight (Heavyweight) and Heavyweight (Light Flyweight).

The basics of boxing are:

  • Punching techniques
  • Guarding techniques
  • Footwork
  • Stance
  • Movement of the body
  • Defense
  • Combination
  • Rotation
  • Spare parts

Punching Techniques

There are seven types. Each punch has its own technique. Some punches require greater strength than others. An example of this is an uppercut, which requires tremendous force. On the other hand, a straight punch requires less power but it is faster than other punches.

There are also many combinations. These are combinations of punches that work together to achieve a specific goal. A combination may contain several parts. An example of this is a left hook, followed by a right crossing. This will damage the opponent’s jaw.

Guard Techniques

A boxer protects himself by using his body. He does so by using his arms, elbows and hands as well as his knees, knees and legs.

Legs

Boxers should use their legs to defend against kicks. When he’s hit, he raises his right leg and runs away from the attacker. To avoid being kicked on the sides, he bends at his knees when the attacker strikes from the front. If the attack comes from behind, however, he can stand straight up and block the kick by his foot.

Elbows

Because elbow strikes inflict a lot of pain, they are very effective. You can deliver an elbow strike directly or indirectly. Directly means that your opponent is hit with your forearm. However, indirectly means that your elbow strike is delivered with another part or your arm.

Hands

Boxers use their arms to stop incoming blows. To do this, they raise their fists higher than their heads and move their arms in the direction that the attack is coming. The attacker’s fist is then in their face.

Knees

To absorb the impact of a punch to the stomach, abdomen, or chest, boxers should bend their knees. Defense purposes are often served by knee strikes.

Feet

When attacked, a boxer should step back and deliver counter-attacks. This way, he can gain distance between himself and his opponent. A boxer must also maintain his balance when responding to an opponent’s counter-attack.

Stances

A boxer must have a stance in order to be effective at boxing. How he defends his self will depend on how he stances. It determines where he will face his opponent and how he will position his body. Boxers can take many different stances. Here are some of the more popular ones:

  • Low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

The Body Movement

A boxer must be able to move around his opponent in order to win a fight. This includes changing speed, position and rhythm.

Rotation

Boxers rotate their arms when they throw a punch. Depending on the type and size of punch, the speed at which the rotation takes place varies.

Combinations

The timing of each punch will determine the effectiveness and efficiency of a combination. A combination that is effective starts with a strong punch, and ends with one that is weak.

Spares
