, Jack Catterall gets shot at justice with Josh Taylor rematch confirmed for March after ‘disgusting’ first fight result

JACK CATTERALL is set for a rematch with Josh Taylor after the controversial result of their first fight was branded “disgusting”.

The boxers met in February for a huge super-lightweight clash but fans and pundits were left stunned when Taylor was handed a split decision victory at the OVO Hydro arena in Glasgow.

Many fight fans believe Catterall was wrongly denied a win over Taylor, which would have seen him claim four super-lightweight belts

The Scot retained his four belts despite being knocked down twice and having a point deducted.

Many critics believed he was also outboxed by Catterall.

But the 29-year-old Lanacshire fighter can now get revenge after it was announced he will meet Taylor in Glasgow again in March 2023.

Promoter Ben Shalom says an exact date will be announced in the new year.

There had been calls for a rematch ever since judges Ian John Lewis and Victor Loughlin scored the fight in Taylor’s favour.

The Scotsman’s win left Catterall’s corner absolutely seething.

Trainer Jamie Moore said after the fight: “I can’t put it into words. He has worked all his life for that moment, he waited three years, did the right things, performs like that, beats the champion in his own backyard and gets robbed.

“What message does that send to the people at home? It’s disgusting.

“Sky have asked him to come down and talk but how is he going to do that? He is absolutely heartbroken.”

Shalom had called the judges’ scoring “embarrassing” and demanded an inquest.

Taylor won a split decision after a score of 114-11 and 113-112 in his favour, while the third judge Howard Foster called it 113-112 to Catterall.

Taylor had initially rejected the need for a rematch and claimed he won the second half of the fight.

Taylor will be defending a 19-0 record when the pair meet again in March

Catterall had been unbeaten with a 26-0 record before the contest, while the win left Taylor at 19-0.

The announcement will leave boxing fans licking their lips at another bout to look forward to in 2023.

Chris Eubank Jr is set to be in action in January with fellow Brit Richard Riakporhe and New Zealand’s Joseph Parker on the undercard.

Meanwhile the undisputed heavyweight clash between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk appears close to being officially agreed.
