Punching Techniques

There are seven types. Each punch is unique. Some punches are more powerful than others. For example, an uppercut is a powerful punch. A straight punch on the other side requires less power, but is more effective than other punches.

There are also many combinations. These are combinations which combine several punches in order to achieve a specific goal. An entire combination could have several parts. For example, a left hook followed by a right cross will cause damage to the opponent’s jaw.

Guard Techniques

To defend himself from being attacked, a boxer uses his entire body. He does this by using his legs.

Legs

Boxers should use the legs to protect themselves against kicks. When he’s hit, he raises his right leg and runs away from the attacker. To avoid being kicked on his side, he will bend his knees if the attack is from the front. If the attack is from the side, he will bend his knees to avoid being kicked on the side.

Elbows

Because they cause great pain, elbow strikes are extremely effective. An elbow strike may be delivered directly or in an indirect manner. Directly refers to hitting your opponent with the forearm, while indirect means you hit him using another part of your arms.

Hands

Boxers use both their hands and arms to prevent incoming blows. To do so, they raise their fists above their head and move them towards the direction of the attack. They then make contact with their attacker’s fist.

Knees

Boxers who are subject to a punch to their stomachs, abdomens, or chests should bend at the knees to absorb the impact. For defense purposes, knee strikes are common.

Feet

If he is being attacked, a boxer must take a step back and counter-attack. He can then gain distance from his opponent. Also, boxers must maintain their balance while delivering counter-attacks.

Stances

In order to box effectively, a boxer needs to establish a stance. The way he defends him will be dictated by his stance. It defines where he faces his opponent and how he positions his body. There are many stances available to boxers. Here are some of the more popular ones:

  • A low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

Body Movement

A boxer must be able to move around his opponent in order to win a fight. This involves changing positions, speed, rhythm and timing.

Rotation

When a boxer throws a punch, he rotates in order to increase the reach of his arm. Depending on what punch is being thrown, the speed of rotation varies.

Combinations

Timing of each punch is crucial to the effectiveness of a combination. A good combination starts with a strong punch and ends with a weak one.

Spare parts

Sparring, a boxing practice session, is designed to improve your boxing skills. A sparring session is where a boxer trains both his mind and his body. In conclusion, the purpose of sparring is to learn how to fight and not get hurt.

You need to have patience and dedication in order to learn how boxing works. You need to train hard and long in order to become a better boxer.
