John Ryder plots one of boxing’s biggest EVER shocks vs Canelo and become only second Brit to win world title in Mexico

JOHN RYDER is dreaming of pulling off one of the biggest upsets in British boxing history.

The 10-1 outsider takes on undisputed super-middleweight king Canelo Alvarez in Mexico on Saturday night with only 50 out of the 60,000 fans there cheering on the Islington southpaw.

Ex-bouncer John Ryder insists he is in Mexico for the dream not the paycheck

Legend Canelo Alvarez is an overwhelming favourite against Brit Ryder

John H. Stracey is one of legendary Brits that John Ryder hopes to emulate, and you’d have to take your hat off to him if he achieved it

If 34-year-old Ryder achieves the impossible by winning the WBA,  WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring titles, it would rank alongside previous feats overseas by legends such as Ken Buchanan, John H Stracey and Lloyd Honeyghan.

And it would be some achievement for the boxer who worked as a bouncer at East London nightclubs in 2017 after a couple of defeats left him languishing.

With typical understatement, Ryder said: “I know it’s going to be hostile. But to go and fight a champion, you should go to their backyard to take their titles and that’s what I am doing.

“Most fighters have gone to Vegas or Texas to fight him but I’m in Guadalajara in the lion’s den.

“People think I am here for the paycheck, I am not. I am here to show that dreams can come true.”

Canelo, 32, has lost just two of his 62 fights with 39 knockouts while Stracey, now 72,  remains the only Brit to ever win a world title in Mexico after he stunned Jose Napoles in 1975.

Over pie and mash in Camden, Stracey told Ryder: “We boxed in the biggest bullring in the world, probably around 40,000 people.

“Just before my ringwalk they put me right next to where the bulls were kept and the smell was awful!

“I am sure they were trying to put me off. It was hostile, they wanted their man to win and you’ll get that, too.

“It can be daunting and frightening but boxers don’t get frightened.”
Ryder, who has won 32 of his 37 pro bouts, promised Stracey he would not be overawed by facing Canelo.

He said: “I have met him a couple of times but that was with a fan-boy cap on.

“The respect is there but it is not going to be handshakes and selfies, I am here to do a job.”

So far Stracey is the only Brit to have lifted a world crown in Mexico after he shocked Cuban-born Mexican Jose Napoles in 1975

The basics of boxing are:

  • Techniques for punching
  • Guarding techniques
  • Footwork
  • Stance
  • Body movement
  • Defense
  • Combination
  • Rotation
  • Spares

Punching Techniques

There are seven types. Each punch is different. Some punches require more force than others. A strong uppercut for example requires a lot of force. On the other hand, a straight punch requires less power but it is faster than other punches.

There are many combinations of punches. These are combinations which combine several punches in order to achieve a specific goal. A combination may contain several parts. A left hook followed with a right-cross will cause injury to the opponent’s jaw.

Guard Techniques

To defend himself from being attacked, a boxer uses his entire body. He uses his arms, legs, elbows, knees, knees, and feet to do this.

Legs

Boxers should use their legs to defend against kicks. If he gets kicked, he raises one leg and turns away from his attacker. To avoid being kicked on his side, he will bend his knees if the attack is from the front. He will block the kick with his foot if the attack is coming from behind.

Elbows

Elbow strikes are very powerful because they inflict great pain. You can deliver an elbow strike directly or indirectly. Directly means that you hit your opponent with your forearm while indirectly means that you hit him with another part of your arm.

Hands

Boxers use their hands to block incoming blows. To do so, they raise their fists above their head and move them towards the direction of the attack. The attacker’s fist is then in their face.

Knees

Boxers should bend their knees when receiving blows to the abdomen, stomach, or chest. Defense purposes are often served by knee strikes.

Feet

When attacked, a boxer should step back and deliver counter-attacks. He can then gain distance from his opponent. Boxers should also keep their balance when counter-attacking.

Stances

A boxer must have a stance in order to be effective at boxing. The way he defends himself will be determined by his stance. It dictates how he places his body and faces his opponent. There are many positions that boxers can adopt. Here are some of the more popular ones:

  • Low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

Moving your body

A boxer must be able to move around his opponent in order to win a fight. This requires changing your position, speed, and rhythm.

Rotation

Rotating his arm to increase the puncher’s reach is a key part of boxing. Different types of punches require different speeds for the rotation.

Combinations

Timing of each punch is crucial to the effectiveness of a combination. A good combination starts with a strong punch and ends with a weak one.

Spare parts

Sparring is a form of boxing that aims to improve your skills. A sparring session is where a boxer trains both his mind and his body. The goal of sparring is to learn to fight, and not to get hurt.

In conclusion, learning to box requires dedication and patience. To be a better boxer you need to train hard.
