Muhammad Ali’s grandson follows in footsteps as MMA star debuts in Las Vegas over 40 years after icon’s last title fight

BIAGGIO ALI WALSH debuts in Las Vegas over 40 years after his grandad’s last title fight – and does so ready to leave a mark of his own.

The lightweight amateur MMA prospect, 24, heads into his second bout with the Professional Fighters League on Friday.

Biaggio Ali Walsh is the grandson of Muhammad Ali

But it will be his first in Vegas, where his grandfather Muhammad Ali found so much success.

It was at the Caesars Palace in 1980 that Ali last challenged for the heavyweight title – losing to Larry Holmes.

And over four decades later, grandson Biaggio works security shifts at the famous hotel, daydreaming of following in his grandad’s footsteps.

He said: “I work at Caesars Palace, I work at one of the nightclubs out there.

“When I’m there, sometimes it crosses my mind like, ‘Wow, my grandfather fought here. It’s a very historical place in the boxing world.

“Sometimes I do feel that. Vegas is obviously the fight capital of the world, it’s my hometown, it’s where I grew up.

“I was born in Chicago but I moved here when I was six. So I grew up here in Vegas and to be able to fight in Vegas is awesome.

“I didn’t think it would come this soon, I thought to myself, ‘When can I fight in Vegas? When can my friends and my local co-workers even come to my fights?’

“And it’s happening now, so I’m super grateful, super blessed that I get to have this opportunity so soon.”

Biaggio – whose 22-year-old brother Nico is an unbeaten boxer – signed to the PFL last year.

The promotion is MMA’s only seasonal format, consisting of qualification and knockout rounds.

Points are earned per method of victory and the top four in each division progress into the last four stages.

From there it is win-or-go-home, culminating in a finale fight with a $1million cheque and title belt on the line.

Biaggio, not yet a professional, has hopes to one day enter the league but for now focuses on justifying his prime-time undercard spot.

He said: “There’s a lot of pro fighters that don’t get this kind of opportunity.

“So yeah, of course that pressure is there but I am looking to show people that I do have talent, I am born for this.

“So yeah, I do have something to prove but what makes diamonds is pressure. So bring on all the pressure in the world, I don’t care.”

Punching Techniques

There are seven types: Left Hook (right hook), Right Hook (uppercut), Cross (cross), Straight, Overhand, Underhand. Each punch comes with its own technique. Some punches require more force than others. A strong uppercut for example requires a lot of force. A straight punch on the other side requires less power, but is more effective than other punches.

There are also many combinations. These are combinations of punches that work together to achieve a specific goal. A combination can contain multiple parts. For example, a left hook followed by a right cross will cause damage to the opponent’s jaw.

Guard Techniques

Boxers protect themselves by protecting their bodies. He uses his arms, legs, elbows, knees, knees, and feet to do this.

Legs

A boxer must use his legs to defend against kicks. After receiving a kick, he will raise his leg and move away from the attacker. To avoid being kicked in the side, he bends down if the attacker attacks from the front. If the attack is from the side, he will bend his knees to avoid being kicked on the side.

Elbows

Because they cause great pain, elbow strikes are extremely effective. You can deliver an elbow strike directly or indirectly. Directly refers to hitting your opponent with the forearm, while indirect means you hit him using another part of your arms.

Hands

Boxers use both their hands and arms to prevent incoming blows. To do so, they raise their fists above their head and move them towards the direction of the attack. They then touch the attackers fist.

Knees

Boxers should bend their knees when receiving blows to the abdomen, stomach, or chest. Knee strikes are often used for defense purposes.

Feet

When attacked, a boxer should step back and deliver counter-attacks. He can then gain distance from his opponent. Boxers should also keep their balance when counter-attacking.

Stances

Boxing is only possible if a boxer has a clear stance. The way he defends him will be dictated by his stance. It determines where he will face his opponent and how he will position his body. There are many stances available to boxers. These are some of our most favorite:

  • Low stance
  • High stance
  • Southpaw stance
  • Western stance

Body Movement

Boxers must maneuver around their opponent to win fights. This includes changing speed, position and rhythm.

Rotation

When a boxer throws a punch, he rotates in order to increase the reach of his arm. Depending on the type and size of punch, the speed at which the rotation takes place varies.

Combinations

The timing of each punch will determine the effectiveness and efficiency of a combination. A good combination starts with a strong punch and ends with a weak one.

Spare parts

Sparring is a form of boxing that aims to improve your skills. Sparring allows a boxer to improve his mental and physical skills. Sparring, in conclusion, is about learning how to fight and not getting hurt.

You need to have patience and dedication in order to learn how boxing works. You need to train hard and long in order to become a better boxer.
